Spring Travel with Baby: What Parents Need to Know About Sleep Away From Home

Spring is here, and for many families that means weekends away, visiting grandparents, camping trips, holidays and more time spent travelling with little ones.

For parents, travelling with a baby can bring a simple but important question: how can we make sleep away from home as familiar and practical as possible?

A familiar sleep routine and suitable sleep environment can make travelling easier for both baby and parents. This is where having a practical sleep solution that can travel with you can be especially useful.

A sleep solution designed for home and away

The Safe T Sleep® LARGE Travel Sleepwrap® has been designed for use with a range of sleeping environments, making it particularly practical for families who travel.

The Large Travel Sleepwrap fits standard and large cots/cribs, portable cots, standard single beds, king-single, double, queen and standard king beds, as well as boats and caravans. It is suitable from newborn to approximately two years of age.

Its compact and lightweight design also makes it convenient to take when visiting family, staying away from home, camping or travelling.

What about warmer weather?

Spring and summer can bring warmer temperatures, so parents may also be thinking about how breathable their baby's sleepwear and bedding are.

The Safe T Sleep Sleepwrap fabric has been scientifically tested alongside other cotton fabrics and has a 0.27 TOG rating. TOG is a measurement relating to the thermal resistance/breathability of a fabric, and the Safe T Sleep® fabric is a specifically woven, double-layered 100% cotton fabric designed to provide high breathability while maintaining strength and durability.

Parents should always dress babies appropriately for the temperature and watch for signs of overheating. The Safe T Sleep website advises checking baby's back or neck and looking for signs such as sweating, damp hair or flushed cheeks.

Why buying new matters for baby safety products

Travelling can also lead parents to look for ways to save money, including buying baby safety products second-hand.

However, Safe T Sleep recommends that Sleepwraps are used for one baby for up to two years and should not be used beyond that period or by more than one baby. The company advises against second-hand Sleepwraps outside those conditions because components such as the fabric and fastening strips can deteriorate with use.

Safe T Sleep also advises against homemade, imitation or copycat Sleepwraps because they have not undergone the same testing, design and quality-control processes as the original product.

For parents considering a second-hand or copycat product, you can read more about the reasons behind this advice in our article: [What are the dangers of using a second-hand or homemade/copycat Safe T Sleep Sleepwrap?]

Help may be available for eligible families

For families in New Zealand who are concerned about the cost of a Sleepwrap, Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) may be able to provide assistance through its processes and accredited assessors. Safe T Sleep advises that assistance has previously been available following a recommendation from a Midwife, GP, Occupational Therapist, Chiropractor, Osteopath, Physiotherapist or other medical professional.

Families should contact Work and Income directly to find out whether they are eligible and what support may be available to them.
